Compassion, competence and teamwork help us provide comprehensive care.
Maryville works with children with serious emotional disturbance and complex mental health needs. Our approach is strengths based, identifying children’s resources and building on them. The care team for each child is multi-disciplinary and can include youth care workers, a child psychiatrist, a therapist, a nurse, a case manager and management and support staff. In addition, expertise may be added from a nutritionist, behavior analyst, psychologist, art therapist and others. Every team member has an integral part to play and communication between team members is paramount. Every moment is a therapeutic opportunity, whether it is therapy time, meal time or bed time. Every interaction between staff and child is an opportunity to heal, to teach and to prepare the child for a life beyond Maryville.
Acute Psychiatric Hospitalization
Maryville's Scott Nolan Acute Psychiatric Hospital provides intensive treatment for children, adolescents and young adults who require hospitaliztion to prevent life threatening danger to self or others.
Trauma Care for Children
Many of the children that we work with have been exposed to conditions that undermine their chances for healthy development. Children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned have a higher likelihood of physical, emotional, behavioral, cognitive and social challenges than the general population. Our programs include specialized care for developmentally delayed children and teens that have been traumatized. Some of our programs for the care and treatment of traumatized children are the only ones of their kind in the Chicago area.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is available to Maryville residents and day patients from the community. Therapeutic programs are individualized and designed to stimulate personal growth and strengthen emotional stability.
Group Therapy
Group therapy allows residents to share their thoughts and feelings with their peers, often leading to their finding commonalities with others. They are supported by others and are, in turn, able to offer others their own strength and support. Residents may also learn new coping skills from their peers. Maryville residents meet regularly in group settings to discuss such topics as self-esteem, conflict resolution, personal values, drug education, anger management and social skills.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy. It helps families or individuals within a family understand and improve the way family members interact with each other and resolve conflicts. Family involvement is considered a crucial part of treatment and families are strongly encouraged to participate in family therapy and in the child’s treatment program. Family therapy is available to Maryville residents and day patients from the community.
Spiritual Health
Spiritual health is an integral part of mental health. Maryville’s children are provided the opportunity to participate in organized religious services and encouraged to seek out time for quiet contemplation and meditation.
Art, Dance and Recreation Therapy
Drawing, painting, and sculpting help many people to reconcile inner conflicts, release deeply repressed emotions, foster self-awareness and achieve personal growth. Dance and movement can provide a positive and constructive way to physically express one’s inner feelings. Team sports teach cooperation and communications skills. Maryville offers a range of safe, therapeutic activities designed within the context of individual treatment plans, including art therapy, dance therapy and team sports.
