Maryville Hosts Symposia on Resilience in Children


Maryville Academy will host a lecture by University of Minnesota Professor Ann Masten on early childhood brain development as part of its symposia on resilience in children.
  
Des Plaines, IL- Maryville and partner Dominican University will present Ann Masten, Ph.D. as the second speaker in a series of symposia focused on resilience in children Thursday, December 6, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Priory Campus at Dominican University in River Forest. Masten, Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Child Development, will deliver a lecture entitled “Ordinary Magic: Resilience in Early Development and Its Implications for Practice and Policy,” followed by a question and answer session.

This lecture is the second in a series of four symposia, entitled “Resilience in the Face of Adversity: A New Way of Thinking About and Working With Children and Adolescents,” which Maryville is hosting in conjunction with it’s 125th anniversary. James Garbarino, PhD, of Loyola University kicked off the series this fall with a lecture on “Resilience Amidst Childhood Trauma” to a full house at Dominican University. The spring and summer lectures will feature Vivian Loseth, Executive Director of Youth Guidance and Bonnie Benard, Senior Program Associate at WestEd in California, one of the U.S. Department of Education’s regional laboratories, both nationally-recognized authorities on resilience. Tickets for each symposium cost $25, and are approved for three continuing education credits for Illinois-licensed social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists through the State of Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulation.
