Sister Cathy's Blog

Week of November 19th

He was unsure whether to trust yet another adult.  There had been so many disappointments as he was moved from place to place.  He missed his mother although, down deep, he knew it was not safe for him to return to his family home.  Still, it was hard to keep moving, to be changed from residence to residence, from school to school.

These words describe a number of the children who have found a home at Maryville Academy in recent years.  They have learned, as Mother Teresa observed, that “loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.”

Our mission at Maryville Academy is to welcome the children, to offer them safe and caring homes, to provide appropriate treatment for the trauma they have endured, and to help them develop their talents to become healthy and contributing adults.  On any given day, we are welcoming approximately 200 children in our residential and day programs.

This Thanksgiving week, I want to thank each of you who have made it possible for Maryville Academy to carry on its mission for children for 124 years.  May God bless you.
